As you might know, last July we decided that Little Miss would be homeschooled for her Year 2 year.
I have written a whole blog post about why we decided to go down that route, but 9 months later we then made the decision to put her back into school as she had caught up so much! The children sit a ‘placement test’ when you first sign up, and that then determines which ‘egg’ they start on. They then do a set of lessons per stepping stone, based around a particular phoneme, before moving onto the next stepping stone. These lessons are mostly game based with a reading section in there towards the end, and populated by cartoon characters!I can honestly say that Reading Eggs was one of the main reasons Little Miss came on so far in her reading.
She absolutely loved going on it every day and would happily spend up to an hour doing each of the different lands. Not only that but there is also a section where the children can go and play different games in the ‘playroom’ which is good for a bit of down time!BBC BitesizeI guess, unsurprisingly, the BBC has some utterly fantastic learning sites that I used both as a teacher and as a parent.

Aside from the fact they are free (which is always a bonus), they are also of really high quality and well thought out. They are definitely worth checking out if you’ve not come across them before. Oxford OwlIf you’ve come across Biff, Chip and the Magic Key, then you’ll have come across Oxford Owl.
I’m not a huge fan of those books, mainly because we have read them to death, but I do like the comprehension questions in the back of the book which always helps both my children think more deeply about the story. However, aside from this, Oxford Owl has a wonderful free e-book library which you can filter according to age, series or phonics understanding. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially as they are now including Project X books, which are high interest, low level phonics designed for older struggling readers!Best Educational Websites for Nature/Science : National Geographic KidsLittle Sir is absolutely into anything to do with the world (oh and Star Wars but that’s another story), so the National Geographic Kids website is a wonderful site for him! It’s full of fascinating facts about everything to do with animals, science, history and geography, and we can get lose hours of time just clicking through the site. It’s the perfect place to head for homework help, but also there are games that the children can play to give them some downtime.

As someone who grew up back when computers were only just arriving in my teenage years, I’ve had to learn to code along with children. Even the coding I was teaching is a bit too far behind, so the Hour Of Code website is brilliant! It was initially developed in order to ensure everyone was able to learn some basic coding within 1 hour, but has expanded significantly since then. Now there are coding games linked to many children’s favourites such as Star Wars and Frozen.
